THE ROLE
This would be a mix of research support, writing, project coordination, and general studio assistance. It will shift over time depending on the needs of the work, but may include:
-Research (film, theory, archives, cultural materials, potential collaborators/interviewees)
-Organizing and synthesizing research in clear, usable ways
-Assisting with writing/editing (grants, proposals, decks, website language, etc.)
-Social media management and strategy
-Scheduling, logistics, and keeping projects moving
-Occasional production support (especially if NYC-based)
-Being a thoughtful sounding board when appropriate
-Tracking and organizing project finances
-Responding to emails, making phone calls, and scheduling
This all would largely take place remotely (which is to say, on your own time, wherever you like), though once a month meetings in person would be welcome.
WHO THIS MIGHT BE FOR
I’m much less interested in someone who already “knows how to do everything” and much more interested in someone who is:
-Deeply curious and genuinely interested in learning
-Comfortable with research as an open-ended, evolving process
-Extremely organized and detail-oriented
-Calm, grounded, and able to hold multiple things and track multiple deadlines at once
-Self-directed and able to take initiative
-Able to work independently and collaboratively
-Positive, can-do attitude
Some prior experience with film, art, archives, or research-based practices is essential. What matters most, however, is how you think, how you approach questions, and how you relate to—and communicate with—others.
A NOTE ON WORKING TOGETHER
I really value clarity, honest communication, and a sense of shared investment in the work. This role is close to my practice, so trust and care matter. My hope is to work with someone over time, allowing the role to evolve and deepen depending on your interests and strengths.
About Us
I’m an artist and filmmaker working across documentary, research-based, and experimental forms. Originally trained as a painter, I’ve mostly been making nonfiction films for the last 20 years. I am currently trying to get back into more of an interdisciplinary practice. I am patient but exacting; I strive to be kind (which I tend to value over “niceness”); funny but serious; I’m warm but have strong boundaries. I am also not great at describing myself…basically I work hard (and expect that of others) but also don’t take myself too seriously and value a good sense of humor.
My projects tend to unfold over long periods of time and are shaped by an ongoing engagement with research—not just as information gathering, but as a creative and relational process. I’m interested in curiosity as a method, in questions that stay open, and in building work that resists easy conclusions. A lot of what I make sits at the intersection of film, theory, history, and lived experience, and often involves collaboration, archival work, and sustained conceptual development. I’m looking for someone who wants to be inside that kind of process.
